2017 BMC Trailfox 02 X01 Bike
The simple life beckons. Unfortunately, the trail doesn’t always agree. Enter the Trailfox 02 X01 Bike. It makes things more straightforward regardless.. The 150mm of front and rear travel means you don’t always have to be so careful about what lines you choose. The Big Wheel Concept design means you can point the bike where you want it to go and it goes there immediately. The geometry allows you to feel powerful when climbing, in control when descending. And the SRAM X01 drive train gives you eleven flawless gears without having to futz with a front derailleur.
X01 matches a 30-tooth chain ring with an eleven-speed 10-42 cassette. The X01 X-Horizon rear derailleur keeps shifting fast, light, and almost completely unshippable thanks to keeping the derailleur a constant distance from the cogs across the range and twelve-tooth pulleys reduce drive train friction.
Shimano’s XT Trail brakes stop 203mm IceTech rotors. The cooling fins on the calipers and the mixed-metal sandwich of the rotors limits heat buildup, which results in better, more consistent braking, no matter how draggy your braking style is.
The hoops are DT Swiss’ E1700 spline. The rims has a super-wide 30mm outside-to-outside dimension and a short 21mm depth. The width is for greater air volume realizing better float at low pressure, and the depth keeps the weight to a minimum-1910g for the set. The thru-axles, front and rear, roll on low-friction, long-life bearings, and the flanges have been pulled as far outboard as possible to improve lateral strength. The carcasses that the rims roll on are from Onza, their Ibex tread, front and rear, with their Freeride-friendly FRC casing. The tires are in the 2.4” width. Both the tires and rims are designed for tubeless, but come tubed. The conversion bits come with, so just goo ‘em up at home and go.
The impressive build is worth nothing if the frameset can’t live up to your needs. The Trailfox platform will further impress. Trail bikes often descend better than they ascend. BMC wanted this bike to be both an impressive descender and competent climber. They got both. They tuck in the rear wheel close to the bottom bracket for traction, efficiency, and balance, and lay back the front end for high-speed control. Their Advanced Pivot System isolates the trail from the drive train, keeping the 150mm of travel active. The suspension can easily be dialed thanks both the sag indicator on the rocker arm and the Cane Creek DB Air Inline shock. DB is double-barrel, and the shock has oil moving through it continuously to work with the four adjustments (low speed compression and rebound and high speed compression and rebound), land the air spring to provide traction and comfort in all conditions
The fork is RockShox Pike RC Solo Air 160mm. Again, think simplicity with only two adjustments, the Solo Air shock and charger damper-with a handlebar-mounted remote for tuning on the fly. The 35mm stanchions, when paired with the thru-axle, are oversized, light, and stiff. Keeping with the theme, the steerer is tapered from a conventional 1 1/8″ to a massive 1 1/2″.
BMC has thought of everything with this bike. The RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post underneath the Fizik Nisene saddle has the cable running internally to the head tube. While this bike comes with a single-ring crank, if you ever want to go for a double- or triple-ring, you can add a front derailleur mount. They even designed the handlebars for optimal control with their BWC thinking.
The BMC Trailfox 02 X01 bike takes charge of the ground, you take charge of the direction and the power.
