Description
2017 BMC Speedfox 03 SLX/XT Bike
The BMC Speedfox 03 helps you roll out of the garage as an experienced rider, no matter how new you are to the game. It rides just like their Speedfox 01, with the front and rear triangles constructed out of formed, welded, triple-butted aluminum instead of carbon-fiber.
It’s hard not to love aluminum. The material is tough, light, and can be shaped almost as precisely as carbon-fiber. Same geometry, same linkage, new material. The result is a bike that puts you in the same position, gives you a largely similar ride, but better at resisting crashes and nicer to the wallet. Weight goes up to 3060g for the frame, but the price drop is more than worth it. This Speedfox still gives you a bike that sits in the sweet spot between all mountain and cross country, allowing you the freedom to race and enduro, but providing you with something that gives you the tools to excel at just about everything off road.
The position has been dictated by BMC’s BWC to make 29er wheels play like they’re 26” just ones that roll better. Long top tube, slack head angle, low bottom bracket, short stays keep you in control of the front wheel, the center of gravity low and the rear wheel tucked in behind.
What makes the bike such a joy in all conditions is BMC’s Advanced Pivot System, which keeps the suspension active and responding to the trail inputs no matter whether or not you’re pedaling, nor how hard. The linkages are machined aluminum and pivoting on oversized bearings. The pivots are smooth to make sure nothing locks up in stiction, and the size means there’s no lateral slop when new, and none down the trail. 130mm of suspension front and rear.
With the rear suspension, there’s a built-in sag indicator on the swingarm. It is as easy to adjust as eyeballing and dialing.
As this bike was built to stay within budget, a few things were simplified. Cable routing, for derailleurs and rear brake are now external, running under the downtube. There’s still internal routing for a dropper seatpost. The bottom bracket standard is now BSA (aka English-threaded). BMC has not installed a chain guide over the bottom bracket, but keeps the chain guide under the chainstay and the thick BMC chainstay protector that quiets chain slap and keeps the stay from getting dinged. The seat clamp comes with, as does the 142x12mm rear axle. They’ve deployed their Natural-Born postmounts for the brake, with replaceable threaded inserts and accommodating 180mm to 203mm rotors.
The BMC Speedfox 03 brings lots and lots of bike to the trailhead, and now you can ride all of it.
