Description
2017 BMC Speedfox 01 XT/XTR Bike
The BMC Speedfox 01 takes the good thing of the Fourstroke and takes it further. The bike is designed to take you deeper into the woods, and up and down steeper, rougher terrain, and keep the system as light as possible while letting you focus on the fun.
The Speedfox is designed around big wheels and 130mm of travel. Big wheels roll better, but they aren’t always an advantage when the going is slow and the line needs to be picked perfectly. Unless it’s a BMC with BWC, Big Wheel Concept. It’s a design BMC conjured to maximize the benefits of 29ers without the drawbacks. Long top tube, slack head angle, low bottom bracket, short stays keep you in control of the front wheel, the center of gravity low and the rear wheel tucked in behind.
130mm of travel is for greater comfort as well as more margin for error. Greater suspension make up for any number of riding sins, and keeps you upright, on the bike, and pedaling, when you’d otherwise be crashing, coasting, or walking.
BMC’s calling is making bikes versatile. This is more suspension than an XC bike and more nimble than an all-mountain rig. You’ll be able to climb like you would with a cross-country ride, as the frame weight is only 2210g for the medium, and descend like you wound on an all mountain rig, as front end is set up for stability at speed.
The fork works as forks should. But the rear linkage is what makes BMC full-suspension bikes special. The Advanced Pivot System, APS, which keeps the suspension active and responding to the trail inputs no matter whether or not you’re pedaling, nor how hard. With the rear suspension, there’s a built-in sag indicator on the swingarm. It is as easy to adjust as eyeballing and dialing. The shock itself is precisely adjustable and can be tuned on the fly thanks to a handlebar-mounted remote.
As this is an 01 level bike, the front and rear triangles are fabricated out of molded carbon-fiber. It’s light and strong, with both the shaping and the lay-up contributing to efficiency and comfort. The linkages are machined aluminum and pivoting on oversized bearings. The pivots are smooth to make sure nothing locks up in stiction, and the size means there’s no lateral slop when new, and none down the trail.
As it typical of BMC, there are lots of smart built-ins. The head tube is designed for 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer tubes. There’s a chain guide over the BB92 bottom bracket shell, and an anti-chainsuck plate on the right chainstay. There’s a under the chainstay chain guide as well and a BMC-designed chain-slap protector as well. The seat clamp comes with, as does the 142x12mm rear axle. They’ve designed cable routing to be internal for derailleurs, brake, and seatpost. They’ve deployed their Natural-Born postmounts for the brake, with replaceable threaded inserts and accommodating 180mm to 203mm rotors.
The BMC Speedfox 01 is for when you want the most of more riding.
