2016 BMC Teamelite 02 XT Bike
The BMC Teamelite 02 XT Bike is a marriage of practicality. High performance meets thrift. Very Swiss.
The Teamelite 02, as always, is based on the Teamelite 01. The ride is designed to maximize the benefits of the 29er wheels and the handling of smaller-wheeled bikes. Think better rolling, more confident descending, and explosive climbing. The 02 boasts the same geometry and same tubing shapes. The difference is a slightly lower grade of carbon cloth, and more of it. The result is a frame that is 100g heavier, but otherwise has the same ride qualities. The primary reason for the design update for 2016 is that the BMC World Cup racing team, believed the Teamelite 01 could be better. They wanted more vertical compliance.
And BMC engineers delivered. This bike doesn’t have quite the same cush as the 01, as the damper that sits between the seatstays and the seat tube has been eliminated. But the frame is still more vertically compliant than the previous iteration, thanks to the new shaping of the seat and chain stays. Here, BMC applied lessons learned on the SLR01 road bike platform along with a 12 x142mm thru-axle and BB92 bottom bracket standard to achieve rock-like rigidity in the lateral plane, with plenty of give in the vertical. BMC is always looking for increased efficiency, and delivers.
The front end is also plenty rigid laterally. The 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” tapered headset helps, as does the Fox Fork, which is the same you’ll find on the Teamelite 01. The 100mm travel 32 Float Performance Series FIT4 with remote. The cartridge has three basic positions, open, medium, and firm, but open can be really dialed in, with 22 clicks to get low-speed compression just so. The remote makes getting into position easy on the trail. The air spring has been put on a diet and automatically equalizes the positive and negative and the curve can be tuned as well. With the thru-axle at the bottom, it finishes the laterally stiff vertically compliant package.
Helping with both the stiffness and the rolling are the DT Swiss X1700 Spline wheelset. The 780g front and 910g rear not only have strong, light, bulletproof DT Swiss hubs, and the eighteen-tooth ratchet system for lightning-fast engagement, but they feature wide, light aluminum rims, which deliver more air volume and a more stable bed for the Continental Race King Performance 2.2 tires. The wheels are delivered tubed, but also come with the hardware to convert to tubeless. The wheels come equipped with 160mm rotors and are stopped by Shimano’s SLX brake calipers.
Shifting is 100% Shimano XT. The shifters, the 36/26 ringed cranks, the 11-40 eleven-speed cassette, even the chain all come from the same group. Unified look, unified performance.
